The  Taita Foundation “For Children in Africa” – St Joseph’s Children Home (Kenya).

This voluntary service project was awarded the Special Green Award for Sustainability:

The jurors wish to stress the importance of environmental issues and the integration of sustainable behaviour in our daily lives. For this reason they chose to make a special award to a project that is able to make sustainable use of the few resources at its disposal. This project, located in rural Kenya, is a children’s home that enables volunteers from Hungary to support 30 children and two nuns. The project grows its own organic produce, rears chickens to feed the children, and sells milk from its own cows to raise funds. Volunteers were instrumental in designing a sprinkler system to cope with increasing drought brought on by climate change.

IKU Sweden

Internationellt KulturUtbyte (IKU)/ICYE Sweden is a youth organisation with 2000 members. The vision of IKU is a sustainable world in peace, where young people are active citizens. We send and receive young volunteers to/from different countries of the world, and engage young Swedes in local groups who run peace projects.

Ruth talks about volunteering in Sweden for IKU

IKU 1

Ruth Odofoley Nortey from Ghana (sending organisation ICYE Ghana) came to work in the hosting project of IKU / ICYE Sweden and is about to finish her project. She has been involved in different aspects of the work of IKU. She has been a support in the voluntary service sector.

IKU 2

IKU belives it is crucial not to only send Swedish volunteers to Africa, but also to host African volunteers in Sweden. This is as relevant, although Sweden is usually seen as one of the most developed countries in the world. The partnership in our projects is very stable, since we work through the federation of ICYE, which we have for many years.

African Information Movement (AIM)

AIM was awarded the Silver Ubuntu 2009 IYVS Award:

“Innovation lies at the heart of this project – innovation in managing the volunteers, innovation in introducing new technologies, innovation in enabling the volunteers to create and implement their ideas. This project was awarded the Ubuntu Silver Award for enabling volunteers to support the youth clubs and other projects established in the village of Komenda, Ghana and for working towards closer participation between Germany and Ghana in the selection, preparation and hosting of the volunteers.”

.

AIM is registered both in Germany and in Ghana. Both organisations work closely together by organising projects for young people. Since the very early stages, German volunteers have been supporting development efforts in Ghana.

AIM1

The activities are centred on working with the youth and motivating young people for social and intercultural aims. The core part of the efforts that led to the development of the project is result of successful and voluntary commitments by young people from Ghana and Europe.

AIM2

All the volunteers plan and realise their own projects; this way it is ensured that they are well occupied and serve the community well.

Campagne Des Hommes was awarded the Bronze Ubuntu IYVS Award:

This project was awarded the Ubuntu Bronze Award for meeting particular needs within the local community by enabling volunteers to support and organise sports activities in schools and training local people to continue such instruction for the benefit of young people. The project does not only try to solve today’s problems, but also to find a solution for the future. In the context of a strict approach to schooling, the volunteers introduced sport and created a close and easy-going atmosphere between students and teachers

.

This project aims at finding remedies to the problem of a lack of physical education teachers in the secondary modern schools and grammar schools of the Prefecture.
