The Volunteer Centre is a Non Profit Organisation with the head office based at 124 Belvedere Road, Claremont.  For the past 30 years it has cultivated relations with communities on a national and international scale. The mission of the Volunteer Centre is “to motivate and develop effective voluntering thorugh consultation, training, information and placement services for the benefit of all.”

Organisations/ Community Projects

The Volunteer Centre, founded by a group of volunteers in 1979 has become a beacon of hope in the volunteering community. The Centre continues to provide volunteer opporunities for volunteers and volunteer support to many organisations on a daily basis. In 2005, the Centre opened a satellite office in Mitchell’s Plain, operating from the Beaconvale Frail Care Centre in Beacon Valley. In 2006, we opened our satellite office in Murraysburg, Beaufort West to serve the Central Karoo area. In the same year we opened our Vredendal office which services the Matzikama district. We continued to open our Khayelitsha office late 2007. These satellite offices are strategically located to be accessible to the community. Today, we provide services to volunteers and NGO’s in these areas. Volunteers are recruited as members to the centre and then referred to member organisations to do volunteering. Volunteering can be done on a short to long term basis. Organisations who become members of the Volunteer Centre are provided the service of having volunteers referred to their orgnanisation. We provide the following service to member organisations:

•    Volunteer referral service
•    Training courses & workshops
•    Network/ Linkages and consultation services
•    Promotion opportunities by profiling member organisation on our website/ newsletter
•    Promoting organisations at our monthly Volunteer Orientation & Information Sessions

Volunteers

The volunteer thus has a choice of doing short to long term volunteering at various organisations/ projects. We strive to match the volunteer to the requirement of the organisation.

Volunteers may be of all ages. For the post matriculant, volunteering may be a means to broaden your horizon while job hunting. For the employed, volunteering may be a means to contribute your skills and time to the community where it is most needed and valued.

Training

Effective Volunteer Management Course
The Centre presents a 2 day intensive workshop with the objective of equipping volunteer managers/ co-ordinators with the basic skills to effective manage volunteers. This course may be customised to the requirements of the organisation.
Office Volunteer Training Course
This 4 day course is aimed at equipping the unemployed volunteer with office & admin skills to assist them in becoming more employable.
International Youth Exchange Programs
Since 2004, the Volunteer Centre has been in partnership with overseas NGO’s to co-ordinate youth exchange programs between southern Africa (south) and Canada, UK and Europe (north). This project has provided many volunteering youth across South Africa with volunteering opportunities while travelling. For more information please contact.

Our Intergenerational Program is targeted at youth and seniors in Mitchell’s Plain. The aim of the program is to built a bridge between these generations where seniors pass down wisdom and youth exchange skills such as arts and crafts with the seniors.
